Baseboard Cleaning: The Job Nobody Wants to Do

Nobody wakes up excited to clean baseboards. They're low to the ground, they run through every room, and the job feels like it takes forever. So most people skip them entirely until company is coming over and suddenly every baseboard in the house looks terrible.

Let's make it less painful.

Why baseboards get so dirty

Dust settles down. That's just gravity. And the lowest horizontal surface in every room is your baseboard. Dust lands there and stays there.

Then there's your vacuum. Every time you vacuum near the wall, the machine bumps the baseboard. Those grey marks and scuffs add up over time.

Shoes kick them. Pets brush against them. Kids drag toys along them. In a busy household, baseboards take a beating without anyone noticing.

A simple method that works

You don't need special products. You need two things: a dry microfibre cloth and a damp one.

Step one: Dry dust first. Run a dry microfibre cloth along the top edge and face of the baseboard. This picks up the loose dust and hair. If you skip this step and go straight to a damp cloth, you just push the dust around and make a muddy mess.

Step two: Damp wipe for grime and scuffs. Dampen a second cloth with warm water and a small drop of dish soap. Wring it out well. Wipe the baseboard down, paying attention to scuff marks and any sticky spots.

Step three: Magic eraser for stubborn marks. Some scuffs don't come off with soap and water. A magic eraser handles those. Just rub gently. It works on painted wood and MDF baseboards, which is what most Toronto homes have.

That's it. Three steps. While you're down there, it's a good time to tackle crown moulding too, since dust settles on both.

How to do a whole house in under an hour

The trick is to work room by room, not baseboard by baseboard. Start in one corner of a room and go all the way around. Then move to the next room. Don't crawl back and forth across the house.

Bring your cloths, a small bowl of soapy water, and your magic eraser in a bucket. Carry it with you. No getting up and down to refill or grab supplies.

In an average three-bedroom home, you can get through every baseboard in 45 minutes to an hour. It goes faster than you think once you're in a groove.

How often should you do it

Every month or two is reasonable for most homes. If you have pets, especially dogs that shed, once a month is better. Pet hair clings to baseboards the way it clings to everything else.

If you're not doing it regularly, twice a year at minimum. Spring and fall are good times, when you're already doing a deeper clean.

The real talk

Baseboards are one of those things that nobody notices when they're clean, but everyone notices when they're dirty. Especially if you're having guests, selling your home, or just trying to keep things looking decent.

It's not a fun job. But it's a fast one when you have a system.

If you're already on your hands and knees, you might as well knock out the baseboard heaters and light fixtures and ceiling fans in the same session. If you'd rather not do it at all, that's what we're here for. At Portuguese Housekeeping Services, baseboards are part of our regular deep cleaning service across Toronto and Mississauga. Give us a call and we'll take care of it.
