Basement Cleaning for Toronto Homes

Most Toronto basements have a personality. Some are fully finished with carpet and drywall. Some are bare concrete with exposed pipes. A lot of them are somewhere in between. Half-finished, a little damp, and dusty no matter what you do.

Whatever kind of basement you have, keeping it clean makes a difference for the whole house.

Why Toronto Basements Are the Way They Are

The soil in the GTA holds moisture. Older Toronto homes in neighbourhoods like Roncesvalles, the Danforth, and Kensington Market often have stone or block foundations that let some of that moisture through. Even newer builds can get damp in the spring when the snow melts and the water table rises. Add in the fact that basements get the least airflow in the house, and you've got conditions that create dust, musty smells, and sometimes mould.

Run the Dehumidifier

If you have a dehumidifier, use it. Especially from March through October. A lot of people run it in the summer and forget about it the rest of the year, but spring is when moisture is worst.

Empty the reservoir regularly, or better yet, run the drain hose to a floor drain so it empties on its own. Clean the filter once a month. A clogged filter means the dehumidifier is running but not doing much.

Fix the Musty Smell

That basement smell isn't just "old house." It's caused by moisture and the dust and mildew that come with it. Air fresheners and scented candles just cover it up.

To actually fix it, you need to address the moisture, clean the surfaces, and improve airflow.

  • Run the dehumidifier consistently.
  • Clean all hard surfaces with a solution of warm water and a splash of white vinegar.
  • Vacuum or sweep the floors, including along the baseboards and in corners.
  • Open a window when weather allows, or run a fan to move air around.

If the smell is strong and persistent, check for visible mould. Dark spots on drywall, joists, or concrete walls mean you may need professional remediation, not just cleaning.

Cleaning Concrete Floors

Bare concrete is easy to clean but it does collect dust. Sweep first, then mop with warm water and a bit of dish soap. For stubborn stains, a stiff brush and some baking soda usually does the job. Avoid bleach on concrete. It doesn't rinse well and the fumes in a poorly ventilated basement aren't great.

Cleaning Finished Basement Floors

If you have carpet, vacuum it thoroughly and consider a deep clean once or twice a year. Basement carpet is more prone to absorbing moisture and developing odours. If it smells no matter what you do, the carpet may need to be replaced.

Laminate or vinyl flooring is easier. Sweep and damp mop. Check the edges where the floor meets the walls for any signs of moisture getting underneath.

Storage Organization

Cardboard boxes in a damp basement are a recipe for a mess. The bottoms soften, things get musty, and eventually they fall apart. Switch to clear plastic bins with lids. They keep moisture out, you can see what's inside, and they stack neatly.

Label everything. Future you will thank present you.

Cobwebs in the Joists

Open basements with exposed floor joists collect cobwebs like nowhere else in the house. A broom or a vacuum with a long attachment makes quick work of them. Hit the joists, the corners, and around the furnace and water heater. Spiders love the warm spots near mechanical equipment. If you are seeing more than cobwebs, our guide to preventing pests through cleaning covers what to look for and how to keep them out.

The Laundry Area

The space around your washer and dryer collects lint, dust, and spilled detergent. Wipe down the machines, clean behind them if you can move them, and clear the lint from the dryer vent. A clogged dryer vent is a fire hazard, not just a cleaning issue.

Keep at It

Basements don't stay clean as long as the rest of the house because of the moisture and dust cycle. A quick sweep and a check on the dehumidifier once a week goes a long way.
