A Professional Cleaner's Take on TikTok Cleaning Hacks

TikTok cleaning videos get millions of views. Some of that advice is solid. Some of it will ruin your floors or waste your afternoon.

I've been cleaning homes in Toronto and Mississauga for over 30 years. Here's my honest read on the trends going around right now.

The ones that actually work

Slow vacuuming: This one is real. Most people push the vacuum too fast. Slowing down gives the suction time to pull up dust, pet hair, and allergens properly. It matters even more in spring when windows are open and pollen is tracking in. I've been saying this to clients for years. Nice to see it catching on.

Baking soda on upholstery: Sprinkle it, let it sit, vacuum it up. It pulls odour out of fabric without soaking it. Works well on couches and fabric headboards. Just make sure you vacuum thoroughly or it leaves a white residue in the weave.

Dish soap and warm water for most surfaces: Half the fancy sprays people buy do the same job. A few drops of dish soap in warm water handles most kitchen messes, countertops, and cabinet doors. You don't need a different product for every surface.

The ones that need a warning label

Cleaning grout with a baking soda and vinegar paste: I see this one constantly. The fizzing looks satisfying but the acid in vinegar can wear down grout over time, especially in older homes. For grout, a stiff brush and a proper alkaline cleaner does the job without the damage.

Using undiluted vinegar on hardwood floors: This comes up every few weeks. Vinegar strips the finish. It might look fine the first few times, but you'll see the dullness creep in. Use a cleaner made for your floor's finish. If you're not sure what finish you have, warm water and a well-wrung mop is safer than vinegar.

The air fryer water-and-soap hack: Filling your air fryer basket with soapy water and running it is making the rounds. I'd skip it. Most manufacturers say not to do this, and it's an easy way to get water into the heating element. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and a small brush when it's cool. That's it.

Dryer sheets on baseboards: The idea is that the anti-static coating repels dust. It does, a little. But dryer sheets leave a film. Over time that film attracts more grime than it keeps off. Clean your baseboards properly a couple of times a year and you'll be further ahead.

The bigger issue with CleanTok

Most of these videos are made to be watchable, not to be right. The dramatic before-and-after is the point. Nobody's filming themselves doing the same steady routine every two weeks that actually keeps a home in good shape.

The habits that work aren't exciting. Wiping down the stovetop after you cook. Running a damp cloth along windowsills when you open them for spring. Vacuuming slowly. Cleaning the bathroom before it becomes a project.

The hacks that go viral are usually shortcuts. Sometimes shortcuts work fine. Sometimes they create a bigger problem than the one you started with.

When to just call someone

If you're watching cleaning videos at 11pm because your house has gotten away from you, that's a sign. Some people want to learn how to clean. Some people just want it done.

There's no shame in either one. Portuguese Housekeeping Services has been helping families in Toronto and Mississauga since the early 1990s. If you want someone reliable who shows up and does the job right, give us a call.
