More Canadians Want to Outsource Cleaning. Here's How to Think It Through.
A recent Toronto Sun poll found that cleaning and laundry are the household chores Canadians most want to hand off to someone else. That's not surprising. What surprises people is how long they wait before actually doing it.
If you're thinking about hiring a cleaner for the first time, or coming back to it after a bad experience, here's a straightforward way to think it through.
Why people wait
Most people hesitate for a few reasons.
Cost: It feels like a luxury. But when you add up the hours spent cleaning each month and what your time is actually worth, the math often shifts.
Trust: Letting someone into your home is a real thing. It takes time to find someone reliable. Ask around. Word of mouth still works better than most apps.
Guilt: Some people feel like they should be doing it themselves. That's worth examining. You don't feel guilty hiring a plumber.
What outsourcing cleaning actually looks like
It's not all or nothing. A lot of clients start small.
Bi-weekly visits: The most common arrangement. A cleaner comes every two weeks and handles the bathrooms, kitchen, floors, and surfaces. You keep up with dishes and laundry in between.
Monthly deep clean: Good for people who are comfortable maintaining the day-to-day but want someone to go after the things that build up. Baseboards, ceiling fans, inside the fridge, that kind of thing.
One-time visits: Useful before a big gathering, after a renovation, or when life has gotten chaotic and you need to reset.
What to be realistic about
A cleaner is not a household manager. They'll clean what's there. If the counters are covered in papers and dishes, they'll clean around them. If you want surfaces wiped, surfaces need to be clear.
The best results come when there's a clear routine and a consistent person doing the work. Rotating through different cleaners means starting over every time. Same person, same schedule, same results.
Laundry is usually a separate conversation. Some services will handle it. Most focus on cleaning. Ask upfront what's included.
How to find someone worth trusting
Referrals are still the best way. Ask a neighbour, a coworker, someone in your building.
When you call, notice how they talk. Do they ask questions about your home, your schedule, what matters to you? Or do they just quote a price? A good cleaner wants to know what they're walking into.
Ask if you'll have the same person each visit. Ask what happens if something gets missed. A company that stands behind its work will have a straight answer.
