How to Choose a Cleaning Service in Toronto

I've been cleaning homes in Toronto for over 30 years. In that time, I've seen good companies and bad ones. Here's what I'd tell a friend who was looking.

What to look for

Insurance: This is not optional. If someone gets hurt in your home or damages something, you need to know it's covered. Ask for proof. A real company will show you without hesitation.

Consistent staff: You want the same person cleaning your home every time. They learn your home. They know where things go. They notice when something changes. That consistency is what turns a cleaning into a relationship.

They answer the phone: It sounds basic. But if you can't reach them when you have a question, what happens when there's a problem? A company that picks up the phone is a company that cares.

They show up when they say they will: Reliability matters more than anything. A great clean means nothing if they cancel on you the morning of.

They ask about your home first: Before the first visit, a good cleaner wants to know about your space. How many rooms. Any pets. Allergies. Areas you care about most. If they don't ask, they're guessing. If you want to know what a professional cleaning actually includes, we've laid that out separately.

Red flags

Too-cheap pricing: If the price sounds too good to be true, it is. That usually means no insurance, rushed work, or workers who aren't being paid fairly. You get what you pay for.

Rotating crews every visit: A different person every time means nobody knows your home. Nobody remembers your preferences. You're starting over each visit.

No insurance: Walk away. It's that simple.

Won't give references: Any company that's been around for a while should have happy clients willing to vouch for them. If they dodge the question, there's a reason.

Questions to ask

Before you hire anyone, ask these:

  • Are you insured? Can I see proof?
  • Will I have the same cleaner each visit?
  • What happens if my cleaner is sick or on vacation?
  • How do you handle complaints or missed spots?
  • Can you provide references from long-term clients?
  • What products do you use? (Important if you have kids, pets, or allergies.)

You're not being difficult by asking. You're being smart.

The franchise vs. independent question

Big franchise companies have name recognition. That's about it. What they usually don't have is consistency. You'll get a different team every time, following a corporate checklist. They don't know your home. They don't know you.

A small, independent company is built on relationships. The owner is involved. The cleaners stay for years because they're treated well. Your cleaner gets to know your home, your preferences, your schedule. That matters more than a brand name on a van.

Why "same cleaner every visit" matters

When your cleaner comes back week after week, they stop needing instructions. They remember that you like the cushions a certain way. They know to be gentle with the antique table. They notice if something needs extra attention.

That's not just cleaning. That's care.

I built Portuguese Housekeeping Services on this idea. Every client gets the same cleaner, every visit. It's not complicated. It just takes a company that values people over volume.
