Hiring a Cleaner for the First Time: What to Know
If you've never had someone clean your home before, it can feel a little strange. Someone you don't know is going to be in your space, touching your things, seeing the mess behind the bathroom door. That feeling is completely normal. It passes quickly.
Here's what to expect so the whole process feels easier.
Before the first visit
You don't need to clean before the cleaner comes. But you do need to tidy. There's a difference.
Pick up clothes off the floor. Clear the kitchen counter of mail and dishes. Put toys in the bin. The idea is to let your cleaner actually reach the surfaces. If they're spending time picking things up, they're not spending time scrubbing, dusting, and mopping.
A quick 15-minute tidy the night before makes a big difference in what your cleaner can accomplish.
What to communicate
Your cleaner wants to do a good job. Help them by being clear about a few things:
Priorities: What matters most to you? Bathrooms? Kitchen? Floors? If you're not sure what's covered, here's a breakdown of what professional cleaning includes. If you have limited time in the booking, knowing your priorities helps.
Areas to skip: Maybe you have a home office that's off limits, or a kid's room they'd rather handle themselves. That's fine. Just say so.
Pets: Let them know if there's a dog or cat in the house. Some cleaners have allergies. And some dogs need to be put in another room during cleaning.
Access details: Alarm codes, lockbox combinations, where to park. Don't leave your cleaner guessing on the doorstep.
You only need to share this once. A good cleaner writes it down and remembers.
What the first visit is like
The first clean always takes longer than the regular ones. Your cleaner is learning your home. Where the light switches are. How the shower door opens. Which products work on your counters.
They're also doing a deeper clean than usual. Think of it as a reset. Built-up grime in the bathroom, dust behind furniture, grease on the stovetop. All the things that pile up over time get handled on that first visit.
After that, the ongoing cleans are about maintaining. It's much faster and much easier.
Setting expectations
Here's something I tell every new client. The first clean is not what your home will look like after every clean. It's better, in a way, because we're starting from scratch. But it's also different. The rhythm settles in after two or three visits. That's when your cleaner hits their stride and you start to see the consistency.
If something wasn't done the way you like, say so. Not a week later. Not in a review. Just let your cleaner or the company know after that first visit. Good cleaners want the feedback. It helps them do better next time.
Tipping
This comes up a lot. Tipping is not expected, but it's always appreciated. If you're happy with the work, a tip around the holidays or after a particularly big job is a kind gesture. There's no set amount. Whatever feels right to you.
One last thing
You might feel guilty the first few times. Like you should be doing it yourself. That goes away too. Hiring a cleaner is not lazy. It's a decision about how you want to spend your time.
