Move-In Cleaning Guide for GTA Apartments and Condos
Why You Should Clean Before You Unpack
The previous tenants may have cleaned when they left. The landlord may have had someone come through. But "clean enough to pass inspection" and "clean enough to live in" are two different standards.
Before your furniture goes in and your boxes cover the floors, this is your one shot to clean every surface properly. Once you're settled, you won't have this kind of access again.
What to Clean in a New Apartment or Condo
Kitchen
- Inside all cabinets and drawers: wipe down every shelf before putting anything away. You'd be surprised what previous tenants leave behind.
- Inside the oven, fridge, and dishwasher: these are the most commonly skipped areas in a move-out clean.
- Under the sink: check for leaks, clean the base, and lay down fresh liner.
- Countertops and backsplash: scrub everything down, including the grout lines.
Bathrooms
- Toilet, inside and out: including the base and behind the bowl.
- Shower and tub: scrub tiles, grout, glass doors, and the drain.
- Medicine cabinet and vanity: wipe all surfaces before storing your things.
- Exhaust fan: remove the cover and clean the blades. This is almost always overlooked.
Throughout the Unit
- All floors: vacuum and mop every room before furniture arrives. Pay attention to closet floors and corners.
- Baseboards and door frames: wipe the full perimeter of every room.
- Light switches and outlets: wipe every one down. People touch these constantly and they almost never get cleaned.
- Windows and tracks: especially in older Toronto buildings where window tracks collect years of grime.
- Inside all closets: vacuum, wipe shelves, and check for damage.
Condo-Specific
- Balcony: sweep and mop. If the previous tenant had plants, check for water stains and soil.
- HVAC filter: replace it. They cost a few dollars and you will notice the difference right away. If you are moving into a new-build condo with construction dust, the filter likely needs attention on day one.
- In-suite laundry: run an empty hot cycle with vinegar to clean the drum.
GTA Moving Timeline
If you're moving within Toronto or Mississauga, here's a practical timeline:
- 1 week before move-in: Book a professional move-in clean if you're hiring one
- Day before move-in: Clean the empty unit (or have it cleaned)
- Move-in day: Focus on unpacking, not cleaning
- First week: Light touch-ups as you settle in
Doing It Yourself vs. Hiring Help
A proper move-in clean on a Toronto 1-bedroom condo takes 3-4 hours. A 2-bedroom takes 4-6 hours. If you're also dealing with movers, unpacking, and setting up utilities, that's a lot for one day.
Hiring someone means you walk into a place that is actually ready. Cabinets wiped, floors done, bathroom scrubbed. All before your first box hits the floor. If this is your first time bringing in a cleaner, here is what to expect when hiring a cleaning service.
