Pre-Listing Cleaning: Get Your Toronto Home Ready to Sell

Every spring, Toronto's real estate market comes alive. Listings go up in March, April, and May, and suddenly everyone's trying to make their home look its best. A clean home doesn't just look better. It tells buyers the place has been taken care of.

Here's what to focus on before the photographer shows up and the showings start.

Declutter before you clean

This comes first for a reason. Cleaning around clutter just moves dust around. You need clear surfaces before real cleaning can happen.

Go room by room. Pack up anything you don't use daily. Clear the kitchen counters down to the essentials. Take personal photos off the fridge. Thin out closets so they look spacious. Box everything else up and put it in storage or the garage.

Once the clutter is gone, the cleaning actually makes a difference.

The kitchen

Buyers spend more time looking at the kitchen than any other room. Every detail matters.

Inside the oven: Open it during a showing, and a dirty oven tells a story nobody wants to hear. Clean it properly. If you haven't done it in a while, use an oven cleaner and give it a full cycle.

Stovetop: Degrease the burners, clean the drip pans if you have them, and make the surface shine.

Counters: Spotless. No crumbs, no stains, no watermarks. Wipe them down with a good all-purpose cleaner.

Sink and faucet: Scrub the sink and polish the faucet. Water spots and calcium buildup make a kitchen look older than it is.

Bathrooms

Grout: Stained grout makes a bathroom feel dirty no matter how new the tile is. Scrub it with a grout brush and a paste of baking soda and water. For really stubborn stains, a grout pen covers them nicely.

Fixtures: Polish every faucet, handle, and towel bar. Chrome should shine.

Mirrors: Streak-free. Use glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth. Wipe in one direction, not circles.

Caulking: If the caulk around your tub or shower is yellowed or mouldy, replace it. A fresh bead of caulk takes 20 minutes and makes the bathroom look new.

Windows

Clean windows make rooms brighter. That matters for listing photos and it matters for showings. Natural light is one of the biggest selling points in any Toronto home, whether you're on a tree-lined street in Bloor West Village or a newer build near Lakeshore Road in Port Credit.

Clean inside and out if you can reach them. Pay attention to the tracks and sills too. Dirt in the window track is the kind of detail that buyers notice up close.

Baseboards and trim

Buyers look down more than you'd think. Dusty or scuffed baseboards make a clean room look neglected. Wipe them all down. Hit the scuffs with a magic eraser. It takes an hour for the whole house and it's worth every minute. The same attention applies to your hardwood floors, which buyers will scrutinize up close.

Light fixtures

Clean light fixtures make rooms brighter and feel newer. Dust the ceiling fans. Wash glass light covers. Wipe down pendant lights. It's a small job with a big payoff, especially in listing photos where lighting sets the mood.

Curb appeal basics

The front of your home is the first thing buyers see, online and in person.

Front door: Wipe it down. If the paint is chipped, a fresh coat takes an afternoon and makes a strong first impression.

Porch and steps: Sweep them clean. Scrub any stains.

House numbers: Clean them so they're easy to read. This sounds small, but it signals that you pay attention to details.

The Toronto spring market

Everyone lists in spring. That means your home is competing with dozens of others in your neighbourhood. In hot spring markets like Leslieville, the Junction, and Riverdale, every detail counts.
