Spring Cleaning Checklist for Toronto Homes

Why Spring Cleaning Matters in Toronto

Toronto winters are hard on homes. Road salt gets tracked through the front door. Windows stay sealed for months, trapping stale air. Dust settles on everything. Whether you're in a semi in the Junction or a townhouse near Yonge and Eglinton, once the snow melts, your home needs a proper reset.

This isn't about tidying up. It's about going room by room and tackling the things that regular weekly cleaning doesn't cover.

Kitchen

  • Inside the oven and range hood: grease builds up all winter from heavier cooking. Pull out the racks and scrub the interior.
  • Behind and under the fridge: dust on the condenser coils makes your fridge work harder. Pull it out and vacuum the back.
  • Pantry cleanout: check expiry dates, wipe down shelves, reorganize. Winter comfort food season leaves a mess behind.
  • Inside the dishwasher: run an empty cycle with vinegar to clear the grime that builds up from Toronto's hard water.

Bathrooms

  • Grout and caulking: winter humidity creates mildew in tile grout. Scrub with a baking soda paste or replace caulking that's gone dark.
  • Exhaust fan: remove the cover and vacuum dust from the fan blades. A clean fan prevents moisture problems.
  • Under the sink: check for slow leaks that may have started over winter. Wipe everything down.

Bedrooms

  • Mattress refresh: strip all bedding, vacuum the mattress surface, sprinkle with baking soda for 30 minutes, then vacuum again.
  • Flip or rotate the mattress: do this seasonally to prevent uneven wear.
  • Closet edit: swap out heavy winter layers. Vacuum the closet floor and wipe shelves.
  • Wash pillows and duvets: most can go in a large commercial washer. Check care labels first.

Living Areas

  • Windows inside and out: after months of being sealed shut, your windows need attention. Clean tracks and sills where condensation collects.
  • Baseboards and crown moulding: dust settles on horizontal surfaces all winter. Wipe every baseboard in the house.
  • Light fixtures and ceiling fans: remove glass covers and wash them. Wipe fan blades.
  • Upholstery and curtains: vacuum sofas with the upholstery attachment. Wash or dry-clean curtains.

Entryway and Mudroom

  • Salt stain removal: mix equal parts white vinegar and water to remove salt residue from floors, mats, and boot trays.
  • Deep-clean the door mat: or replace it entirely. After a Toronto winter, it's earned retirement.
  • Wipe down the front door: both sides. Clean the hardware.

Outdoor Prep

  • Sweep the balcony or porch: clear winter debris before it stains. Condos along the Harbourfront and in Liberty Village collect extra grime from lake wind and construction dust.
  • Check window screens: repair or replace damaged screens before you start opening windows for the season.
  • Clean the BBQ: if it sat outside all winter, give it a thorough scrub before the first use. Backyards near High Park and the Don Valley tend to collect extra leaf debris over the winter months.
