How to Save Money on House Cleaning Without Cutting Corners
Hiring a cleaner is not cheap. But it does not have to break the bank either. After 30 years of running a cleaning company, I have seen every trick people try to save money on cleaning. Some work. Some just make things worse. Here are the ones that actually help.
Provide your own supplies
This is the single easiest way to lower your cost. When a cleaning company supplies the products, they build that cost into the hourly rate or add a surcharge. If you buy your own supplies, you skip that markup entirely.
This is what we do at Portuguese Housekeeping Services. You provide the cleaning products and equipment. We bring the skill and the labour. It saves most clients 10 to 15 percent compared to companies that include supplies, and you get to choose exactly what goes on your surfaces.
All you need is the basics. An all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, bathroom cleaner, a vacuum, a mop, and some microfibre cloths. Nothing fancy.
Go bi-weekly instead of weekly
Weekly cleaning is great if your budget allows it. But bi-weekly works for most homes. The house stays reasonably clean between visits, and each session costs the same hourly rate. You just have half as many visits per month.
If you are on a monthly schedule and finding the house gets too dirty between visits, bi-weekly is the sweet spot. It is less expensive than weekly and the cleaning is easier because things do not build up as much.
Do a quick tidy before the cleaner comes
This one surprises people, but it makes a real difference. Your cleaner is there to clean, not to pick up. If the counters are covered in dishes and the floor is covered in toys, the cleaner spends the first 30 minutes just clearing surfaces before they can start the actual work.
A quick 10-minute tidy before the visit means the cleaner gets straight to cleaning. That is less time needed and a lower bill for you. Put dishes in the dishwasher, pick up clothes off the floor, and clear the counters. That is it.
Book recurring visits
One-off cleanings almost always cost more per visit than recurring ones. There are a few reasons for that. A first visit takes longer because the cleaner does not know your home yet. A home that has not been professionally cleaned in a while needs more work to get to a baseline.
Once you are on a regular schedule, each visit is faster because the cleaner maintains the standard they set on the previous visit. Less time means less cost per visit, even at the same hourly rate.
Skip the franchise markup
Franchise cleaning companies charge more because they have to cover their franchise fees, marketing costs, and corporate overhead. You are paying for their brand, not for a better clean.
A small, independent company does not carry that overhead. The owner is involved. The cleaners are often the same people who have been with the company for years. You get more personal service at a lower cost.

Be clear about priorities
If time is tight one week, tell your cleaner what matters most. Maybe the kitchen and bathrooms need full attention, but the bedrooms just need a quick vacuum. A good cleaner will focus their time on what you care about, and that keeps the visit efficient.
This only works when you have the same cleaner every visit. They already know your home, so a quick conversation is all it takes to adjust the plan.
What not to do
Do not hire the cheapest option you can find. If someone is charging $20 an hour, they are either uninsured, cutting corners, or not being paid fairly. Cheap cleaning is expensive when something goes wrong or when you have to re-clean behind them.
Do not skip cleaning altogether to save money. A home that goes months without professional cleaning takes much longer to bring back to a good standard. Regular visits keep the cost per visit low.
If you are comparing options and want to know what to look for, we have a guide on how to choose a cleaning service in Toronto. And if you are wondering whether to pay hourly or a flat rate, we have written about that too.
Portuguese Housekeeping Services charges $45 per hour with a 3-hour minimum. Same cleaner every visit. You provide the supplies, and we do the work. Give us a call at (905) 501-1509 if you would like to set up a regular schedule.
